March 25-29 OUT like a LION
March 2010 Thursday Night Jazz at Stayner's
APRIL is Jazz Appreciation Month
MAY is time to Jazz Up Your Spring

In the conquering days of the Roman Empire, a successful army general could command a celebration of honour.  Plays would be written, music performed and a feast displayed in the name of the victor.

This festival was called a triumph.

In Halifax, winter is cold and dark, yet Spring is always its conqueror.  As April approaches, the time comes to roar through the last days of the cold's restraint and spring...

Montréal Quebec’s ambient power trio Torngat create majestic instrumental music that is at times as breathtaking as the glorious Quebec mountain range from whom they take their name. They put on a very energetic and inspiring performance and sound a lot bigger than a trio. Their heavy use of organs recalls elements of Tom Waits and even hints of the pre-jazz era Soft Machine.  Opening for Torngat is Halifax's Paper Beat Scissors, a group of rotating guest musicians driven by the bedroom compositions and voice of Tim Crabtree. PBS is known for its beautiful blend of acoustics, electronics and countless other instruments.

March '10 | Thursday Night Jazz at Stayner's

Thursday is the night for jazz lovers of all sorts.  Come out to hear local musicians perform standard and original music, and hang with the rest of our cool community.

Thursday, March 4, 2010 - Two By Two

Two By Two has plenty of groove to infuse all of Stayner's with the beat.

Two by Two: post-modern fusions of funk, jazz and blues performed by a quartet sporting a classic Hammond B3 organ sound. Comprised of Matt Myer on Hammond’s XK-2 organ synthesizer, Dustin Lindensmith on tenor sax, Ross Burns on guitar and Paul Keddy on drums, Two by Two's repertoire is selected from composers such as Ray Charles, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, James Brown and Stevie Wonder along with originals from the group.

Thursday, March 11, 2010 - The Music of Charles Mingus

Some of the hottest seasoned players will gather to honour a righteous jazz man - Charles Mingus.

The Music of Charles Mingus is filled with the roots of jazz and blues, a mixture of complex rhythms and powerful melodies. Six of Atlantic Canada’s most in demand jazz musicians join together to pay tribute to ‘The Music of Charlie Mingus”. The group consists of Geordie Haley (guitar), Chris Mitchell, Rob Crowell (saxes), Danny Martin (trombone), Tom Roach (drums) and Tom Easley (bass). These musicians joined forces last fall to present a Mingus concert at Stayner’s. With rave reviews the group has widened the book of tunes and are getting together for three special shows in March.

Thursday, March 18, 2010 - Krisanne Crowell

The brass is in good hands as Krisanne Crowell shows off her slick horn arrangements of blues and jazz classics.

Match a good soul with some Humber College training and you have Krisanne Crowell's style of trained grit. She is known for her instant appeal and slick horn arrangements and has been a mainstay on the Halifax blues and jazz scene since she co-founded the popular R&B band, The Floorboards in 1986. Krisanne's latest group is Solarcity and she performs regularly with the David James Orchestra and the Jazz Hoods.

Thursday, March 25, 2010 - Chris Mitchell & Friends (OUT like a LION opening night)

Welcome to the official opening of the OUT like a LION music festival. We have enough of the local pros hanging around that Stayner's will be jumping.

A trip through time guided by the music of Mingus, Miles Davis, Bird, Billie Holiday and some band originals, featuring Chris Mitchell saxophone, Jamie Gatti bass, Dave Burton drums, Geordie Haley guitar, Lisa MacDougall voice, Danny Martin trombone and Rick Waychesko trumpet.
