Good day lovely jazz fans. Lulu says this weekend is Jazz Weekend.
*Welcome, Manx fans. Let JazzEast usher in your new era of jazz (and its music relations) entertainment.
*Festival photo retrospective. Lulu, Zoe and I went to the Centre for Art & Technology's photo exhibit of select shots from the festival. Many of the JazzEast regulars were there as well as lots of students. The students did an amazing job. The pictures were fine and their displays were inventive. Some of the pictures are still up for viewing at 1313 Hollis. I encourage you to stop by and take a look.
*Wowza. The energy at the Harry Manx concert had enough force to carry me all week. Over 400 people were there (were we sooo close to a sold out announcement), the room sounded great, and everyone was charmed by Harry's wit and masterful performance. My favourite part was meeting some members and newsletter subscribers. Expanding a name into a lovely face is always better. The longer I am in this community the richer the rewards.
*Billy Hart, the incredible drummer who played with John Abercrombie this past festival, was recorded "Live at the Village Vanguard," and NPR has it ready for you to stream on-line - http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90611896
*Hallelujah. The ladies of JazzEast just finished our post-mortem for the festival. If you tried to reach us over the past couple of days, then now you know that we were away, making plans to make you musicially happier. Today, we are closer as a team and are burning to be even smarter. I absolutely adore my sisters of jazz.
*Contact East. Tomorrow, I travel to Moncton to hang out with other presenters at a conference dedicated to showcasing musicians. There is no jazz on the bills, but we will see what can be done down the road.
*FYI, the run of dates for next year's festival are: July 9-17, 2010.

02. FLAMENCO CON FUSION II
----------------------------------------------------------------------
JazzEast has another incredible fall concert for you, and it will be a MAGIC CARPET RIDE. I kid you not.
Maria Osende expresses through dance all of the majesty I feel we women can possess. Alex Conde knows how to bring a melody along for a ride that teeters on chaos without ever losing its form. Haggai Cohen Milo adds mid-eastern touches you did not think would sink so nicely into a Flamenco groove. Dinuk Wijeratne is a ball of energy that calmly spreads out but hits you like a rainbow-bolt of lightening.
JazzEast has for you a stage that will mix performers in and out of each other's performances and heighten the sounds with tastes from a few special guests. The tension in the air will be feverishly tight. Safe guard your breath and do not blink.
Here are the little write-ups you will see in the Halifax Pop Explosion program insert with this week's Coast.
ALEX CONDE & HAGGAI COHEN MILO
If Flamenco is a mongrel beauty of Arabic, Andalusian, Islamic, Sephardic and Gypsy sounds, then pianist Conde and bassist Milo are coy interlocutors. Playful and smart, theirs is a marriage for honour and disobedience.
MARIA OSENDE FLAMENCO COMPANY
These musicians, singers and dancers proclaim the seductive qualities of Flamenco. Sinuous and dramatic, Osende & Co add a twist of modern confidence to the centuries old art form. Expect one smoldering night in Spain.
DINUK WIJERATNE & KINAN AZMEH (FLAMENCO CON FUSION II)
Music borne of the streets is tempting to these classically trained musicians. Composer-soloists Wijeratne (piano) and Azmeh (clarinet) merge with Flamenco in order to subvert two forms of tradition. Result: gentle, odd and fiery music.

St. Matthew’s Church in Halifax
Celebrated flamenco guitar virtuoso Juan Martín will return to Halifax to perform with a traditional Spanish singer and dancer at St. Matthew’s Church (1479 Barrington Street) on Thursday, October 8 at 8 p.m. Special guest is JP Cormier. Voted one of the top three guitarists in the world by Guitar Player magazine, Martín is an accomplished musician. He has 20 albums to his credit and a multitude of books and DVDs. His latest album, Rumbas Originales features 16 of Martín’s original compositions from throughout his career. Spanish newspaper El Mundo said, “He has a terrifyingly good technique and an absolute dominance of the guitar, filling the concert hall with crystalline clarity.” The London Times said “he is a giant in the flamenco guitar tradition,” and The Guardian, UK said “In Martín’s hands flamenco is not so much a musical style as an entire culture compressed into a quivering box of air.” Tickets are $27.50 in advance and $32.50 day of show (including tax) and are available at all Ticketpro outlets, by phone at 1-888-311-9090 and online at www.sonicconcerts.com. ISRAELI BASSIST AND COMPOSER HAGGAI COHEN MILO BRINGS HIS SECRET MUSIC PROJECT BACK TO HALIFAX AND THE ACOUSTICALLY IMMACULATE SONIC TEMPLE
"Haggai Cohen Milo revealed over a set of ridiculously infectious music that he's in the soul restoration business!" (Graham Pilsworth, "The Coast", Canada). Halifax, NS – The Secret Music Project made its Canadian debut during the Atlantic Jazz Festival this past July and will return to Halifax to record its debut full-length album in front of a live audience at the beautiful and acoustically immaculate Sonic Temple on October 22, 23 and 25. Formed in 2006 by bassist and composer Haggai Cohen Milo, the group has performed internationally at various festivals and high profile venues, such as the Aspen Jazz Festival (Colorado), Atlantic Jazz Festival (Halifax) and First Night Festival (Boston). The band members have been touring extensively on an international level, collaborating with prominent jazz and world music figures and receiving rave reviews and recognition from the New York Times, the Boston Globe, DownBeat Magazine and All About Jazz. The Secret Music Project plays middle-eastern jazz within a folk-oriented frame, relying heavily on the freedom of improvisation. Raised in different corners of the world, the band members have been influenced by a variety of lifestyles, cultures, and musical genres. With a bass player from Israel, a piano player from Spain, a percussionist from Colombia and a saxophonist from the U.S., the Secret Music Project embodies these distinctions and uses them to create a unique an innovative sound. The Secret Music Project conveys a message that is on one hand complex and intelligent and on the other hand deep and emotional. If you missed this group during the Atlantic Jazz Festival, ask anyone who had the opportunity to hear them live – the music is nothing short of beautiful and invigorating. Tickets are $25 and will be available at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased through JazzEast (902.492-0812) at 1313 Hollis St. (2nd floor). Seating is limited.
