Beyond Brazil is an ensemble formed in 2005 that performs music showcasing various folkloric styles of Brazilian music. The quartet’s show features a tribute to Brazil’s most famous composer and songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim. Beyond Brazil is full of energetic percussion- dominated grooves, and syncopated-guitar harmonies. The smooth, soaring melodies are sung aptly in both Portuguese and English by vocalist Shelley Meisner. Chris Churchill plays bass and does the arrangements. Award winning composer/conducter Scott MacMillan is the featured guitar player playing on both nylon-string and electric guitar. ECMA award-winner Tom Roach is featured on percussion and drums. He brings his arsenal of traditional Brazilian percussion instruments and drum kit. During some performances special guests join the group adding extra flavour to the ensemble’s core four. The positive response to the ensemble has demonstrated how wonderful and accessible this project is and how mainstream Brazilian musical elements have become. Shelley Meisner (Vocals) – credits include many festivals and recordings; Scott MacMillan (Guitar) – One of Canada’s premier composers and a veteran of the East Coast music scene playing and composing in numerous styles and venues. Chris Churchill (Bass) – over 15 years as a bassist and arranger performing in over 80 countries. Tom Roach (Percussion and Drums) – member of the Canadian Forces Stadacona Band as well as years with Lennie Gallant, Natalie MacMaster, Barra McNeils, etc.
